When the temperatures start climbing, chickens can struggle with the heat just like we do. If you are a new chicken keeper, it is important to know what to watch for. Chickens do not sweat, so they use other ways to cool themselves. Panting and holding their wings away from their bodies are two things you may notice when they are trying to release heat. They will also look for shade and may spread themselves out instead of staying close together. Learning these signs can help you recognize when your flock needs a little extra help staying comfortable.
There are several simple things you can do to help your chickens when it gets hot. Make sure they always have access to plenty of fresh, clean water, shade, and good airflow. You can also give them cool surfaces to stand on. A brick placed in a shallow pool of water can provide a cool place for chickens to stand and cool their feet. Another easy trick is to wet down an area where your chickens like to hang out. The cool, damp soil can give them a comfortable place to dust bathe. You do not need anything fancy to help your flock beat the heat. Sometimes a little shade, water, airflow, and a cool place to hang out can make a big difference.
The biggest thing is to pay attention to your chickens and their behavior, especially during very hot weather. If you notice increased panting, wings held away from the body, or chickens searching for cooler areas, take a look at their environment and make sure they have ways to get out of the heat. And while Chicken Daddy may believe that a kiddie pool and an ice-cold drink are the answer to everything, your chickens have their own ways of staying cool. Give them the right environment, watch for changes in their behavior, and you will become much better at knowing what your flock needs when the temperature goes up. Karen Howeth What the Clucks Up
